POSTED BY KIM — Hot, cold, cold, more cold, hot again…a typical St. Louis autumn. Although now it’s
currently cold and we’re all scrambling to get the houseplants in and the tropicals situated. *Some of us* have even been interviewed about the weather on the Channel 11 news! Nothing is guaranteed to elicit a call from the media like skipping a shower. (But that’s a subject for another post.)
We’re still selling perennials and reminding people that even though the air temperature is cold, the ground in St. Louis will remain warm through mid-December, so there’s still time to plant perennials, shrubs, trees, and even roses. I planted several roses last year in the first week of November, and every one of them over-wintered fine.
We’ve started cutting back foliage at the nursery in preparation for over-wintering our perennials, so if you do buy anything now — at Sugar Creek or elsewhere – think of it as buying healthy roots. It’s an investment now for a beautiful plant next year. And deals abound as nurseries are trying to tidy up before winter.
So as the Sugar Creek street sign says: Smart gardeners plant now!
