POSTED BY KIM — It’s sprinkling here in Webster Groves and it’s finally beginning to feel a little more like true autumn. The leaves have all turned spectacular colors, but the weather has been unusually balmy — not anymore!
I’ve been noticing the great fall color on my climbing hydrangea — a very respectable yellow. I planted this little specimen 3-4 years ago. It hasn’t bloomed yet, but I’m a patient gardener. There are various theories about when, why, and how climbing hydrangeas bloom, but it’s my understanding they need a certain amount of age — sometimes several years — before they bloom. I’ve also read that they wait to bloom until they reach the top of the support structure on which they’re growing. ?? Maybe that’s a coincidence.
Regardless, I’m a *huge* hydrangea fan, so expect to see more here about new varieties that we’re offering in 2009. We’ve ordered some stunning and unusual selections from Spring Meadow Nursery that will be available next spring, like the Edgy Hearts Hydrangea.

I am a big hydrangea fan too. I tried the climbing type and it did not work so I resorted to schizophragma hydrangeaoides. It is hanging tough but not doing much. Looking forward to seeing your hydrangeas.
