What happens to Sugar Creeks’ plants in the winter?

POSTED BY KIM — A question we are often asked is ”What do you do with all these plants in the winter?”  We’re lucky that we specialize in perennials because they are (mostly) super easy to overwinter outside.

The first thing we do to prepare our fall plant inventory for winter is to cut back all the foliage.  (You DO NOT need to do this in your garden at home.)

Next, we drop everything to the ground, where the plants benefit from the warmth of the earth.  We treat everything with a pop of fungicide, then cover the plants with plastic or weather-proof cloth.  This is where the the plants benefit from having the foliage removed — it reduces the amount of fungus that might grow over the winter.

Voilà!  The plants are put to bed for the winter.  You can do this at home if you picked up any fall bargains that you didn’t have a chance to get into the ground.  Or you can simply move those potted plants into the garage or a basement and let them go dormant over the winter.  Move them back out in the spring, give them some water, and they should revive nicely.

FYI — even though our plants are sleeping, our gift shop is open through Christmas eve.  We also have a nice selection of evergreen trees and shrubs in colorful red pots that make great live Christmas trees or you can certainly use them in landscape plantings.
