A support group for spouses of gardeners?

Spouses who don't garden? NO FUN!

POSTED BY KIM — A man came in to the nursery earlier this week to buy his wife a soil knife for Christmas.  I told him I thought it would be the best gift she got all year (because I really love that soil knife!), and he replied that he had to buy it quickly because otherwise, she would buy it for herself.  (She had seen it featured earlier on our Top 10 Gift List.)

Then he said that he ought to start a SUPPORT GROUP for husbands who had wives who garden.  :)   I’ll admit, I laughed.  I know what he means, and I’m sure my husband does, too.  It’s not like we gardeners throw our money away in casinos, bars, or other dens of iniquity.  But I’m sure to our spouses it sometimes feels that way.

And it’s not just women — many of our regular customers are men and just as hooked.  But I do think that if we had space at Sugar Creek for a “waiting room” that included Barcaloungers, a big screen TV and chicken wings, we’d probably be the most popular nursery in the Midwest.

Let me point out there is one really nice benefit to being the gardener (and not the spouse) — and I speak from experience here — it’s SO NICE to not have to ask anyone’s opinion when you’re working in YOUR garden!!  If I want a rose by the fence, I put a rose by the fence.  If I want phlox by the driveway, I put phlox by the driveway.  And everyone else can kiss my asters!  Freedom to make decisions all by myself — I am a gardener, hear me roar!

Hm.  Maybe my husband does need a support group…

  • WELL SAID KIM. Why does anyone think gardeners freak out this time of year!? We are all in withdrawal from not being able to be in the garden!I can see why you blog so much. If you cannot be IN the garden, you(we ) can at least TALK about the garden. Actually, it seemed you were kind of freaking out here, Kim. Hold on girl; spring will come. Hey, maybe we need a support group for each other! Hmmm……

  • My wife gets more flowers now that I garden, and I put a hydrangea where she can see it from her studio window, well I did have to move some bee balm which grew taller…

  • You’re a good man, Wayne! :) Your wife is a lucky woman…
