For Caleb — Lady Tresses update!

POSTED BY KIM — Caleb and I have admired these Lady Tresses all summer — Spiranthes cernua var. odoratum.   We both bought a few plants, and without reading the tag, threw them in the ground where they suffered dramatically.    FINALLY, Caleb did a little research and told me that Spiranthes is a bog plant.  I [...]

It’s raining, it’s pouring…

POSTED BY KIM — There’s nothing like a rainy Saturday afternoon to make you feel like taking a nap.  We were busy busy busy this morning — Tina gave a talk this morning about doing up your containers for fall, always a popular presentation — then the black clouds came rolling in.  So Michael is covering the [...]

POSTED BY CALEB
With that, we leave Powell Gardens.  It was a bright spot in my garden-deprived life.  Of course, I hope to return soon.

Introducing the Sugar Creek Gardens Action Figure

POSTED BY KIM — I was talking to my 10-year-old son, Cameron, at bedtime this evening, and he told me he thought Sugar Creek should have its own action figures.  After we finished laughing, he gave me all the details:

A quick look at what’s blooming on my deck

POSTED BY KIM — Even though the season is winding down, I was out on my deck this morning and saw my passion flower vine blooming.  Yay!  It was a bittersweet moment because it was the first bloom of the season, and here we are in late September.  I overwintered this plant last year in [...]

Clematis ‘Avant Garde’ — a tiny show-stopper

POSTED BY KIM — I am slowly growing my clematis collection (pun intended), and besides ‘Rooguchi,’ which blew me away this year, I’ve had the pleasure of watching this little ‘Avant Garde’ clematis bloom its head off.
I’ve got it in a fairly shady location that gets maybe 2-3 hours of hot afternoon sun.  I cut it [...]

The year of the delphinium…at least in my garden

POSTED BY KIM — Delphiniums are one of those flowers that I would plant every year and they would die every year.  So I would plant again…and they would die again.  Maybe the fifth time is a charm, because THIS year, my delphiniums were the joy of my entire garden.
I planted a bunch last fall [...]

Bloomerang Lilac: Too good to be true?!

POSTED BY KIM — We recently got in a shipment of the reblooming dwarf lilac, ‘Bloomerang.’  It was shocking to unload these lilacs off the truck in SEPTEMBER IN FULL BLOOM!  They smelled heavenly.  I popped one in Caleb’s garden, so we’ll see how it overwinters.
But the real test will be its reblooming powers next year.  [...]

One of these things is not like the other…

POSTED BY KIM — Cabbage and kale are cool-season standards in St. Louis gardens and containers, and they’re also very popular with the *varmint population.*  In the photo above, you see two purple kale.  The one on the left has been a). chopped up by a weed-eater; b). torn apart by the hands of a [...]
