Hydrangea ‘Invincibelle Spirit’ — the new pink ‘Annabelle’

POSTED BY KIM — All you hydrangea lovers have probably already heard about ‘Invincibelle Spirit,’ the world’s first pink ‘Annabelle’ hydrangea. You can’t open a magazine almost without seeing an ad for it, so we expect it to be a big big seller next year.  I say “next year” because it hasn’t been released for regular retail sale yet (although a few mail order companies might have small quantities — and by “small,” I mean quart-sized plants).

But yay! the hydrangea gods were looking down on us this week and we were able to get a hundred or so 3-gallon ‘Invincibelle Spirits’ in at Sugar Creek — all budded or blooming.

If you don’t know about this plant, here are the quick stats:

  • It’s an arborescens (native) type hydrangea, so it blooms on new wood. This means late freezes and fall pruning won’t result in loss of flower buds.
  • It’s a RE-BLOOMER.  Starts blooming in July and goes until a hard frost.
  • Reaches 3′-4′ tall and wide.
  • Prefers morning sun, afternoon shade, and maybe additional watering during drought.
  • Approximately 100 blooms per shrub.
  • Proven Winners will donate $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each shrub sold.
